These songs were originally recorded in an old Craftsman house in Boyle Heights, CA between 2012-2015 and then sat dormant for a few years. Once the pandemic hit, I dusted them off and added things like keys, percussion, and back-up vocals. They were helped to the finish line with feedback from friend/collaborator Greg Lucas and finally, it was time to let them fly.

A note about one of the songs, 'Maria.' It's my first in Spanish and was borne out of watching my landlord's father (Jose Pereyra, RIP) walk the streets of Boyle Heights during my last chapter living there. One day, I asked him what we was thinking about and he said, "Maria," his departed wife. I immediately wrote a song from the perspective of an elderly man longing for the company of his wife who had passed and added an 'urban Mother Mary' layer in there as well. Months later, I directed a video for the song and it's currently on YouTube on my channel: Matt Black Box Music. Check it out!
