about

All songs written, produced, and mixed by Matt Reischling
Cover art design by Juan Pacheco, Greg Lucas, & Mychela Sevven
Cover concept by Matt Reischling

After my previous album, 'All Things Pink,' the material got a little darker on this one, but there are also moments of joy. So it's a mixed bag, sonically. I played around with more keyboards, fired up some beats, laid down my first electric guitar riffs, brought in more talented friends, and tried to make a loose concept album, which leads to the title itself.

I named it 'Stretches Of Concrete' because LA is the land of concrete. It makes up the bones of the city. At any one time it's above or below you, or to your left or right, which provides a weird sense of comfort and protection. I also felt that hard, non-emotional concrete contrasted well with the emotions that perpetually stir inside human beings. So it was this juxtaposition of a fixed, cold thing against warm, alive things that inspired me. There's also some melancholy baked into the title too, as in, here we all are, living a brief, fragile life, searching for connection inside a vast network of concrete that's doing everything it can to keep us physically apart.

The album is wide-ranging, stylistically, which was a new thing for me. There's bouncy piano (Eucalyptus), dramatic space vibes (Useless Space Junk), a dance-y meditation on death (Light Now Fading), a video game instrumental (Summertime In The Future), beat-driven indie pop (Fragments To Protect), and quirky folk (Ghosts In The Blue), among others. One song, Nothing Matters, even got placed in an animated cable commercial that ran for a while on the East Coast, which was surreal.

I hope you like what you hear and as always, I'm honored you're paying attention, whoever you are, wherever you are. Peace. xo -Matt
